Our modern perception of fashion magazine images is largely a perception of what Steven Meisel laid the foundations for. Steven Meisel’s photographs have appeared on the covers of the experimental Vogue Italia more than 300 times since the late 1980s. His shoots have received more spreads in the demanding Vogue US than those of other authors. The shoots that attract attention are executed both technically and conceptually masterfully. This makes them stand out even from the general flow of what Vogue publishes. In them, the models appear in images that refer to different eras, with different styles of clothing and hairstyles. And Steven Meisel demonstrates a deep knowledge of the history of photography in each of these shoots. For each shoot, he selected a style from one of the famous photographers of the past that corresponded to the era of the image. But he did not repeat the photographs that had already been taken verbatim. Meisel subtly dissected the approach, manner and techniques of famous photographers, and then performed his own photography with this set, but at a higher level. So, what path did Steven Meisel take to become an icon of fashion photography today? And what can we learn from him? We try to answer these questions in our material.
